Ottawa County Community Health Assessment
Since 2001, Magruder Hospital and its many health partners have conducted community health assessments for measuring and addressing the health status of the Ottawa County community. We have chosen to assess Ottawa County as our community because this is where we, and those we serve, live and work.
Magruder Hospital along with the Ottawa County Community Health Partners have reviewed the health assessment report, developed action steps and begun implementing our Community Health Improvement Plan. Our priority areas and outcomes that we would like to improve include:
Priority 1 Mental Health
Strategies: Expand mental health and suicide prevention education in Ottawa County schools, Implement 'Handle with Care' program, Expand peer support services and recovery meetings in Ottawa County
Partners: Ottawa Co. Health Dept., Prevention Coalition, NAMI, county schools, Oak House, Juvenile Court, Family & Children First Council, Hope Recovery Network, Ohio Dept. of Public Safety
Priority 2 Substance Use
Strategies: Implement community awareness campaign and seller service training
Partners: Ottawa Co. Health Dept., Prevention Coalition, Recovery community, Mental Health & Recovery Services Board, Ohio Investigative Unit
Priority 3 Access to Care
Strategies: Include doctors and clinics in OCTA loop, create telehealth education material, look at hiring primary care and implementing dental bus, promote OSHIIP and Marketplace Navigators, expand Find-a-doc services and promote Community Health Worker program

Priority 4 Economic Stability
Strategies: Create listing of available and affordable childcare providers, create affordable housing options, reduce homelessness and precarious housing
Partners: Ottawa County Improvement Corporation, Childcare Committee Task Force, YWCA, Riverview Healthcare Campus, Northern Manufacturing, Nelson Manufacturing, Housing Task Force, Ottawa Co. Auditor, Firelands Forward Workforce Development, Homelessness Coalition, Salvation Army, municipality developers
Priority 5 Chronic Diseases
Strategies: Expand physical activity opportunities, expand health education opportunities, expand Community Health Worker program

Priority 6 Environmental Conditions
Strategies: Increase education on bed bugs, reduce mold exposure, address local effects of climate change, expand Mosquito Survey Program, expand sewage treatment system replacement assistance program
Partners: Ottawa Co. Health Dept., Ottawa Co. Job & Family Services, Home Health Agencies, Law Enforcement, OCTA, Schools, Lake Erie Shores & Islands, Emergency Management Agency, Regional Planning, Ohio Dept. of Health, Environmental Protection Agency
Magruder and all of the Ottawa County Community Health Partners view this assessment and plan as a living, breathing document that needs to represent the current state of our communities. To that end, we strive to routinely review the document to make sure the goals and strategies that we are implementing are relevant and impactful. Certainly, there is much work to be done in these and many other areas related to the health of Ottawa County. We are committed to continuing that work as a hospital and as a partner in the communities we serve.
